UFC on FX 5: Browne vs. Bigfoot Fight Night Bonuses
While everyone wondered if Jeremy Stephens would be released from jail and fight Yves Edwards at UFC on FX 5, the rest of the fight card played out. While the drama behind the scenes unfolded the fighters inside the Octagon put on a solid card in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The UFC on FX 5 card would ultimately end up being two fights short, but the fighters remaining delivered upsets and thrilling comebacks. With lots of options for the Fight Night bonuses the UFC passed out extra checks in the amount of $40,000 to the following.
Submission of the Night – Justin Edwards
Justin Edwards opened the UFC on FX 5 main card with a quick 45 second win over Josh Neer that no one saw coming. From the clinch position Edwards moved to a standing guillotine position and when Neer left an opening he jumped on it and locked it down tight. Neer dropped to his knees and shortly thereafter went limp and the fight was stopped via technical submission. Neer didn’t know what hit him and was seen asking the referee “what happened” once he woke. The submission was the first finish inside the Octagon for Justin Edwards.
Knockout of the Night – Michael Johnson
Not only did Michael Johnson knockout Danny Castillo, he also came back from nearly being finished twice in the opening round. Castillo sent Johnson to the canvas with a sneaky right hand and tried to finish with ground and pound. Johnson recovered but then nearly ended up tapping out to a side choke as the round near its end. Behind a round Johnson came out in round two guns a blazing. The move paid off as a short punch dropped Castillo and some ground and pound cleaned it up. The win gives Johnson three in a row and improves his record to 4-2 in the UFC.
Fight of the Night – Diego Nunes vs. Bart Palaszewski
Featherweight Diego Nunes came out with an aggressive new look that had Bart Palaszewski confused and at time lost inside the Octagon. It took Palaszewski until the third round to figure things out and by then it was too late. Nunes looked impressive out there but credit goes to Palaszewski for hanging in there and final getting into the fight. In that third round Palaszewski hurt Nunes but could not capitalize and would end up losing the fight by unanimous decision.
