Referee’s stumble through Welterweight semifinals at Bellator 78
Last night’s Bellator 78 saw the season seven welterweight tournament reach the finals in not so pretty fashion. While the four fighters vying for the $100,000 over sized check and a title shot did what the do best the referee’s were not doing their best work. Their actions or lack thereof tainted the two semifinal outcomes and overshadows the welterweight finals match up.
What many thought would be an exciting striking battle between Marius Zaromskis and Andrey Koreshkov turned out to be a one-sided beating. Unfortunately referee Jerry Poe let said beating last for eight or nine punches longer then needed. Both fighters came out aggressive but once they settled into the fight the undefeated Koreshkov landed a left hook that stumbled Zaromskis to the canvas. Against the cage the Russian brought down the ground and pound that clearly had his opponent out but the referee saw it otherwise and Koreshkov continued to land until it was more than apparent Zaromskis was done.
In the Bellator 78 main event, former welterweight champion Lyman good look impressive against Michail Tsarev and got one step closer to a chance at getting the belt back. Even though Trarev is a submission ace Good took the fight to the ground right away and nullified the submission game with serious ground and pound. Things got confusing in round two when a jab from Good appeared to scrap the right eye of Tsarev who claimed he was poked in the eye. Referee Greg Franklin looked as if he was going to step in and halt the fight but instead let the fight continue. While the Russian continued to claim eye poke Good kept the pressure on and finished the fight via TKO.
Andrey Koreshkov and Lyman Good will now face each other in the season seven welterweight tournament final and the winner will move on to face the winner of the Ben Askren vs. Karl Amoussou title fight set to take place sometime during season seven.
Well it wasn’t the cleanest night inside the cage at Bellator 78, but at least the outcomes were correct and the judges didn’t mess things up!
