2008 Olympic Gold Medalist Henry Cejudo Signs Deal with Gladiator Challenge
Henry Cejudo won an Olympic gold medal for freestyle wrestling in 2008 and now he’s bringing his talents to Mixed Martial Arts. After several months of deliberating, Cejudo decided to sign a multi-fight deal with the California-based Mixed Martial Arts promotion Gladiator Challenge. Cejudo will make his MMA debut on March 24, 2013 at The Soboba Casino Outdoor Arena in San Jacinto, CA.
“It was very important to me to join an organization that has an established track record of helping young fighters grow into world-class athletes and champions,” said Henry Cejudo
Gladiator Challenge was established in 1999 and have held over 160 events including such fighters as Quinton Jackson, Rashad Evans, Urijah Faber, Tyson Griffin, Chael Sonnen and Michael McDonald. They are pioneers in the sport and have been highly dedicated to driving the growth of mixed martial arts in California.
Henry Cejudo competed in the 55kg (121 lbs.) weight class and had to defeat four world-class wrestlers, including Japan’s Tomohiro Matsunaga in the finals to capture Olympic gold. He made history in the process, becoming the youngest American wrestler to bring home the gold. A few years later though he would retire from the sport after failing to qualify for the 2012 Olympics. Even though he competed at 121 lbs. in wrestling it is believed Cejudo will fight in MMA at 135 pounds.
There has been lots of negative news coming from Olympic wrestling these days but Henry Cejudo and Gladiator Challenge has brought a little positive news for a change.
