UFC 158: St Pierre vs. Diaz Live Results and Analysis
The fans have been waiting a very long time for tonight’s UFC 158 main event. The hype and trash talking is over, UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will defend his title against the former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz.
The UFC 158 fight card is headlined by a mega fight and not many of the “other” fighters on the card have been given much face time but several of them have the chance to steal the show tonight.
Including the night’s main event, the UFC 158 main card will conclude with three welterweight bouts featuring six of the top ten fighters at 170 pounds. The co-main event between the former interim champion Carlos Condit and the #1 ranked Johny Hendricks will most likely determine the next welterweight challenger. It’s not just the main card though; the UFC 158 preliminary card will have three more welterweight bouts.
In total the UFC 158 fight card has 12 fights for fans to enjoy. PRELIMINARY CARD (Facebook, appox. 3:35pm PT / 6:35pm ET)
135 lbs.: George Roop defeated Reuben Duran by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)
- Good fight to start out the night. All three rounds were rather close but it was Roop who did just enough to get the rounds. The win by Roop was his first as a bantamweight.
135 lbs.: T.J. Dillashaw defeated Issei Tamura by 2nd rd KO (0:26)
- Dillashaw faked the shot in and threw a lieft leg that caught Tamura in the head with the knee. Tamura fell and was finished on the ground by Dillashaw. The KO by Dillashaw is his first inside the Octagon.
170 lbs.: Rick Story defeated Quinn Mulhern by 1st rd TKO (3:05)
- Big win for Rick Story with his back against the wall. He really showed no respect for the power of Mulhern and consistently got inside to land the big shot. It was a left hand to the eye of Mulhern that start things for Story and finished things for Mulhern.
PRELIMINARY CARD (FX, 5pm PT / 8pm ET)
155 lbs.: John Makdessi defeated Daron Cruickshank by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
- An all stand up fight that looked more kickboxing then MMA. In the second round Makdessi got his jab working and Cruickshank began to slow. Makdessi closed the fight out very strong to earn the decision and improve his UFC record to 4-2.
170 lbs.: Jordan Mein defeated Dan Miller by 1st rd TKO (4:42)
- Miller nearly finished the first early with a armbar submission but Main escaped and never looked back. Mein out punch the UFC veteran and finished the fight with a nice flurry. The loss was the third in four fights for Miller.
145 lbs.: Darren Elkins defeated Antonio Carvalho by 1st rd TKO (3:06)
- Some will call it a controversial or quick stoppage but Carvalho was hurt after being on shaky legs earlier. Carvalho popped right back up after the fight was stopped but Elkins gets the win and remains undefeated as a featherweight.
170 lbs.: Patrick Cote defeated Bobby Voelker by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
- Great fight to close out the preliminary card. Both fighters have a granite chin and showed it off tonight. Cote looked good at the new weight class and Voelker looked good in his UFC debut. Early fight of the night candidate!
MAIN CARD (Pay-per-view, 7pm PT / 10pm ET)
155 lbs.: Mike Ricci defeated Colin Fletcher by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
- Kind of a slow fight between the Ultimate Fighter two runner-ups. Ricci didn’t look great but got his first UFC win anyway.
185 lbs.: Chris Camozzi defeated Nick Ring by Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
- Not the most exciting fight of the night and probably one of the bottom three of the night. All standing and not many combinations. Camozzi gets his fourth straight win in the UFC and should get a step-up in competition his next time out.
170 lbs.: Jake Ellenberger defeated Nate Marquardt by 1st rd KO (3:00)
- The return to the UFC was not a good one for Matquardt. He came out strong with several leg kicks but the heavy hands from Ellenburger was the deference in the fight. Big win from Ellenberger handing the former Strikeforce welterweight champion two consecutive losses.
170 lbs.: Johny Hendricks defeated Carlos Condit by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
- What a fight! Back and forth action and just a flat out fun fight. Hendricks threw so many left hand bombs that he likely broke his hand. Condit once again put on a great performance and might have stole the fight if this was a five rounder. Hendricks was the #1 fighter heading into this fight and with the win should get GSP next, if the champ has his hand raised next.
170 lbs. Title Fight: Georges St-Pierre defeated Nick Diaz by Unanimous Decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45)
- Dominate performance from the champion, winning all five rounds over Diaz. It wasn’t pretty but the last few fights from GSP really haven’t. GSP took the challenger down several times and other than the third round the champion held his own on his feet. After the fight the two embraced and Diaz said he might be down with MMA.
