No title shot for Josh Burkman at WSOF 3
Following his impressive win over Aaron Simpson at last weekend’s WSOF 2, Josh Burkman felt his deserved a World Series of Fighting title shot. At the same time though he also felt that his next WSOF opponent, Jon Fitch, did not deserve a title shot as he has not “earned” it he explained.
Well Josh Burkman has been granted his wish; Jon Fitch will fight for the WSOF welterweight title in his promotional debut at WSOF 3 on June 14, but nor will Burkman. His plan backfired and their rematch from UFC Fight Night 4 will headline the card in a non-title fight.
Neither request Josh Burkman made during his post fight interview seemed farfetched. The former UFC fighter has won seven of right fights since being released from the UFC, including four in a row and two under the WSOF banner. As for Fitch, he went just 1-2-1 in his last four UFC bouts including a unanimous decision loss to Demian Maia prior to his release.
Where Burkman got it wrong though was Jon Fitch comes into WSOF with the “name” recognition and a resume in the Octagon to back it up. Something a promotion just getting started like the World Series of Fighting wants and needs. They signed him to fight the top dogs and right now Mr. Burkman you are that dog.
Title shot or not, Josh Burkman has a great opportunity at WSOF 3. Not only does he get his chance to avenge his 2006 loss but defeating Fitch would further prove that he does in fact deserve a title shot.
Josh Burkman versus Jon Fitch will take place in the WSOF 3 main event on June 14th in Las Vegas, Nevada and air live on the NBC Sports Network.
