The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale takes place from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
PRELIMINARY CARD (Facebook, 5:30 p.m. ET)
145 lbs.: Daniel Pineda defeated Justin Lawrence by 1st rd. Kimura Submission (1:35)
- Pineda took the fight to the ground right out the box and Lawrence could not get back to his feet. Pineda grabbed the left arm of Lawrence and with only one hand he forced a tap via Kimura.
145 lbs.: Maximo Blanco defeated Sam Sicilia by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
- Real fun back and forth bout that could have ended in a draw if the referee had decided to penalize Blanco for all the holding of the fence. That didn’t happen though and Blanco gets the win.
145 lbs.: Cole Miller defeated Bart Palaszewski by 1st rd Rear-Naked Choke Submission (4:23)
- Miller was getting picked apart in his feet by Palaszewski but once he got the fight to the ground it was a different story. Miller gets a much needed win but now needs to find some consistently.
PRELIMINARY CARD (FUEL TV, 7 p.m. ET)
185 lbs.: Clint Hester defeated Bristol Marunde by 3rd rd. TKO (3:53)
- The boo birds were out early in this fight but they would eventually turn to cheers as things heated up. Hester has little takedown defense and that is what kept Marunde in the fight, well that and his chin. Finally though it was an elbow from Hester that dropped Murande and ended the fight.
185 lbs.: Dylan Andrews defeated Jimmy Quinlan by 1st rd. TKO (3:22)
- Quinlan tried and tried again but could not get the fight to the ground. Typically when that is the case the striker knocks out the grappler and that’s pretty much how it played out. Andrews was one of the good stories from the TUF 17 house and gets a huge win tonight.
185 lbs.: Luke Barnatt defeated Collin Hart by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)
- This was a very much closer fight then the scorecards would tell. Hart took down Barnatt several times but never kept it there for too long. Barnatt got his jab going as the fight progressed and busted up the face of Hart in the process. No way the fight was 30-27 though!
185 lbs.: Josh Samman defeated Kevin Casey by 2nd rd. TKO (2:17)
- Casey nearly ended the fight via submission early in fight but somehow Samman escaped what looked to be a deep triangle and then a deep armbar. Casey gassed himself out though and had zero answers for the knees from Samman in round two.
MAIN CARD (FX, 9 p.m. ET)
185 lbs.: Bubba McDaniel defeated Gilbert Smith by 3rd rd. Triangle Choke Submission (2:49)
265 lbs.: Travis Browne defeated Gabriel Gonzaga by 1st rd KO (1:11)
- Pretty quick fight between the heavyweights. Gonzaga was looking to take Browne down and while pushing him up against the cage, Browne knocked out Gonzaga with elbows.
135 lbs.: Cat Zingano defeated Miesha Tate by 3rd rd. TKO (2:55)
- The second women’s UFC bout did not disappoint! Tate stormed across Octagon when the opening bell rang and was in control for the first half of the fight. After Zingano escaped an armbar attempt halfway through the second round she began to take over. When the third round started Zingano took Tate Down and dropped heavy ground and pound. Tate got clipped with a knee trying to get up and got clipped again in the same manner that ultimately ended the fight. Zingano wins and will now coach TUF 18 opposite Ronda Rousey.
185 lbs. TUF 17 Final: Kelvin Gastelum defeated Uriah Hall by Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
- The hype was behind Uriah Hall and that looked to have been his downfall. Playing the part of the “new Anderson Silva”, Hall did less striking and more moving around and bcaking up against the cage. Which allowed the underdog Gastelum to score takedowns and score points. When Hall wasn’t drinking the kool-aid he was winning the second round but too much kool-aid derailed the hype train and Gastelum is the one crown TUF 17 winner.
135 lbs.: Urijah Faber defeated Scott Jorgensen by 4th rd. Rear-Naked Choke Submission (3:16)
- Solid way to end the night. On the ground Faber was in full control and even when Jorgensen took him down, Faber eventually ended up standing back up or wound up on top. Jorgensen’s best round was the third and you thought maybe the tide was turning. Faber quickly shot that thought down as the fourth round started and he took Jorgensen down. Faber took his back and got the arm under the neck of Jorgensen for the choke out.
