Results from an odd UFC 159: Jones vs. Sonnen
It was an odd night in Newark, New Jersey for UFC 159 as the event saw a couple broken body parts and a fighter incorrectly being announced the winner. One of those broken body parts was the left big toe of the UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. Despite the nasty looking break the champion entered the record books by successfully defended his title for a record tying fifth time.
It wasn’t the fight fans had hoped for, but more of what fans expected. Jon jones dominated the challenger Chael Sonnen and finished him via first round TKO. The UFC 159 main event officially closes the book on The Ultimate Fighter 17 and in the end it was Coach Jon Jones getting the last laugh.
Lightweight Pat Healy made a great UFC debut to open the UFC 159 main card as he defeated Jim Miller via third round submission. The two put on a “Fight of the Night” earning performance and Healy grabbed an extra bonus with the “Submission of the Night”. The impressive performance and $130K worth of bonus money puts Healy in a position for a top five lightweight his next time out.
Rounding out the UFC 159 bonuses was Roy Nelson earning his third “Knockout of the Night” bonus with his first round knockout of Cheick Kongo. Nelson has now won three in a row and a potential big fight has to be looming for Big Country.
