Every year, the UFC puts on a big card for New Year’s in Las Vegas. This Friday, December 30th, the MGM Grand Garden Arena will be home to UFC 141: Lesnar vs. Overeem, a battle between two of the largest Heavyweights on the UFC roster. UFC 141 also marks the return of TUF 8 winner, Efrain Escudero and the final preliminary broadcast on SpikeTV. Let’s take a look at the five main card bouts and break them down.
It’s not often we have a main event that hinges on a cup of urine. Drug testing fiascos aside those, we have a solid main event fight with an exciting undercard ahead of us at UFC 141. Tonight, the UFC takes over the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas for UFC 136: Edgar vs. Maynard III. The night’s fights cap off the two-day UFC Fan Expo being held at the George R. Brown Convention Center. As has become the norm, many fights had to be shuffled around due to fighters pulling out as the result of injuries. Now with the card finalized, let’s take a minute to break down the Main Card.
The lightweight division will finally be released from its nearly one year prison sentence at Saturdays UFC 136 when Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard face off for the third time. When the two fought to a draw at UFC 125 in January the top of the lightweight division was locked in handcuffs as they waiting for Edgar vs. Maynard 3. The waiting games are finally over and win, lose or draw the lightweight champion is moving onto another challenger.
In a marathon of UFC cards, we get the best for last with dual title fights headlining UFC 136. First up, the Featherweight strap is on the line, as Jose Aldo faces a 3-time title challenger in Kenny Florian. Whether you think Florian deserves a title shot or not, this is still a fight you can get behind for pure entertainment value. The icing on the cake is the rubber match, and perhaps one of the best fights of the year, as Frankie Edgar once again faces Gray Maynard in defense of his Lightweight title.
After dropping 3 of his last 4 fights under the Zuffa umbrella former WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Thomas Brown came into Philly with his back up against the wall at UFC 133. This is a guy who held a place on many folks Top 10 Pound 4 Pound List after his 2nd straight victory of Urijah Faber back in the Summer of 2009. Brown has since dropped one too many fights being pushed out of the Top 10 Featherweight Rankings and looking to save his job against Nam Phan on the Nights undercard.
