Two more casualties can be added to the long list of injured fighters that the “year of injuries” has claimed. Heavyweight Shane Carwin and lightweight Gray Maynard both suffered knee injuries that have forced them to withdraw from their upcoming bouts.
Two really big former Strikeforce heavyweights are scheduled to fight on Super Bowl weekend at UFC 156 February 2nd 2013. Hopefully coming off his year-long suspension to fight will be the former Strikeforce Heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem taking on the man they call “Bigfoot”, Antonio Silva.
Following the cancellation of back to back events there hasn’t been much good news to talk about from Strikeforce. Today though finally there was some news as the promised “stacked” card to open 2013 is beginning to take shape and thus far it is stacked indeed.
When Paul “Semtex” Daley makes his second Bellator appearance at next month’s Bellator 79, he’ll do so against Current North American Allied Fight Series Welterweight Champion Kyle Baker. News of the bout was announced today by MMA Institute, where Kyle “The Alley Cat” Baker trains and is the training center’s co-founder.
Today Strikeforce announced their plans for a major fight card planned for January of 2013. On a side note, the promotion also announced that their November 3rd fight card in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma would be canceled due to injuries to Frank Mir and Luke Rockhold. But hey look on the bright side, at least there will be an event in January.
After being able to say they’ve never had an event cancelled, ZUFFA has now had two in the span of a single month. Late tonight Strikeforce released a statement that Saturday’s Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy in Sacramento, California had been cancelled due to an injury suffered to lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez.
