Tyson Griffin and Joe Stevenson Seek New Life at 145 Pounds

As is commonplace in today’s MMA world, Tyson Griffin and Joe “Daddy” Stevenson are shedding some pounds in hopes of remaining relevant in the UFC.  Both men have been staples of UFC lightweight division in recent years and now find themselves both on uncharacteristic three fight losing streak.  As many speculated with the merger of the WEC into the UFC, fighters are dropping from lightweight to featherweight without fear of a pay cut from competing in a less visible and lower profile organization.

Which UFC Lightweights could move down to featherweight?

With the UFC/WEC merger set to happen at the beginning of 2011, the smaller UFC Lightweights will finally have the option of dropping down to Featherweight while remaining a UFC fighter. Staying in the UFC meant being in the “big show” and everything that comes with that, including earning more money. Moving to the WEC though, while still under the ZUFFA banner meant less recognition, less sponsorship money and smaller paychecks.

A Lot on the Line for Griffin and Gomi at UFC on Versus 2

There is a lot on the line for both Tyson Griffin and Takonori Gomi at UFC Versus 2.  Both fighters are coming off losses and can’t afford a second straight defeat.

During his days in Pride, Gomi was widely regarded as the best 155 lbs fighter in the world, now however Gomi is just 2-3 in his last five fights and a loss to Griffin would put him at 0-2 in the UFC.  Gomi lost his UFC debut to Kenny Florian via rear naked choke at UFC Fight Night: Florian vs Gomi.  This is a must win for Gomi is he wants to not only stay relevant in the 155 lbs division but also to avoid possibly being cut by the UFC as well.
